What is contango and why does it affect commodity ETFs?
Contango occurs when futures contracts cost more than the spot price. ETFs must "roll" their contracts regularly, buying higher and selling lower, which erodes returns over the long term.
Is it better to invest in commodities through stocks or futures?
For long-term, producer equity ETFs (miners, oil companies) are generally preferable as they avoid contango and pay dividends. Futures-based ETFs are better suited for short-term.
