Performance is generally similar long-term. ESG ETFs may underperform when oil rises (often excluded sector) but benefit from clean energy growth. MER fees are slightly higher.
Check the index methodology: some "ESG" ETFs exclude very few holdings. Review top holdings to confirm they match your values. ETFs with strict exclusions are generally more reliable.
