An ETF is a basket of securities (stocks, bonds, or other assets) that trades on a stock exchange like a regular stock. It allows an investor to gain diversified exposure to hundreds or thousands of securities in a single purchase, typically at low cost.
VEQT.TO (Vanguard All-Equity ETF Portfolio) holds approximately 13,000 global stocks in a single ETF. By buying one share at ~$50, you own a fraction of all those companies worldwide. XEQT.TO (iShares) offers similar diversification with a slightly different MER.
ETFs revolutionized investing for individuals. Before they existed, you had to buy each stock individually or pay high fees for mutual funds. Today, ETFs let you invest like large institutions, with fees often below 0.25% per year.
