Annual fees are fixed charges by a broker to maintain your account. Many Canadian online brokers don't charge them, or waive them under certain conditions (minimum balance, regular activity).
If you're starting with a small amount, choose a broker with no annual fees. Fixed fees eat a disproportionate percentage of a small portfolio.
