A moving average is a technical indicator that calculates the average price of a security over a given period (e.g., 50 days or 200 days), updating each day. It smooths out daily fluctuations to reveal the overall price trend.
If the 200-day moving average of XIU.TO is at $32 and the current price is $34, the ETF is trading above its long-term trend, which is generally seen as a positive signal. When the price drops below the 200-day moving average, some investors see it as a caution signal.
The moving average is one of the simplest indicators for beginners to understand. It helps distinguish temporary price movements from the real trend. However, for a long-term investor practicing the "couch potato" strategy, moving averages are mostly informational — they shouldn't push you to buy or sell impulsively.
