Old Age Security (OAS) is a monthly benefit paid by the Canadian federal government to most people aged 65 and over who have lived in Canada for at least 10 years. Unlike CPP/QPP, it is not based on your contributions but on your length of residence.
In 2026, the maximum OAS is approximately $727 per month (for ages 65-74) and about $800 for those 75 and over. Important trap: if your net income exceeds approximately $90,997, you must repay part of OAS. This is the "OAS clawback." Beyond approximately $148,065, OAS is completely eliminated.
OAS is a guaranteed basic retirement income, but the clawback can significantly reduce what you receive if your income is high. This is an important reason to plan your RRSP/RRIF decumulation strategically.
