The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) is Canada's main stock exchange. It lists large Canadian companies and is particularly known for its financial, energy, and natural resources sectors. Canadian ETFs whose ticker ends in .TO are traded there.
Canada's five big banks (RBC, TD, BNS, BMO, CIBC) are all listed on the TSX. An ETF like XFN.TO (iShares S&P/TSX Capped Financials Index ETF) groups these banks and other Canadian financial companies. The TSX is open Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern time.
The TSX allows Canadian investors to buy ETFs in Canadian dollars, avoiding currency conversion fees. For a Quebec or Canadian investor, buying VEQT.TO or XEQT.TO on the TSX is generally more advantageous than buying equivalent US ETFs on American exchanges, especially in a TFSA.
