A large-cap stock is a company with a total market value generally exceeding $10 billion. These are well-established businesses, often household names like major Canadian banks or American tech giants.
In Canada, large caps include the "Big Six" banks (RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC, National), Shopify, and Enbridge. The XIU.TO ETF (iShares S&P/TSX 60) holds the 60 largest Canadian companies. In the US, large caps like Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon are accessible through VFV.TO (Vanguard S&P 500).
Large caps form the core of most beginner portfolios. They often pay regular dividends, hold up better during crises, and are highly liquid. An ETF like XEQT.TO or VEQT.TO is composed primarily of global large-cap stocks.
